Cool Will Get You Killed

There are many cool things on the Internet. There are a lot of very creative and bright people in the world. When these entities come together, it tends to lead to some very cool displays in the self-defense industry. Unfortunately, when it comes to self-defense, cool will get you killed. At the time of Fit to Fight®’s inception, the most popular Krav Maga curriculum followed in the US required students to demonstrate over 100 techniques during a black belt test. That curriculum has since expanded. One of the first things that happened once Fit to Fight® began offering Krav Maga training was an evaluation of this curriculum (this still happens, daily). Currently, to attain black belt level at Fit to Fight® in Krav Maga, one needs to show proficiency and understanding of just over 70 moves and movements, and that represents an addition of several moves and movements from the previously mentioned curriculum. You will find no spinning kicks, jumping kicks, slapping kicks, “suicide throws”, diving rolls, karate hand strikes, fighting two guys with knives, fighting two guys with clubs, fighting one guy with a knife and one guy with a club…well, you get the point. While the level of skill required to execute these techniques is admirable (and yes, cool), at Fit to Fight® these techniques are abandoned for moves and movements that are more clinical and germane to likely situations, as well as those that can actually be trained with realistic pressure. Training time is maximized, by focusing on situations more common to the typical student. Instead of taking great pains, no matter how creative, to justify and demonstrate the inclusion of techniques, at Fit to Fight® such techniques are modified or eliminated altogether.
There is no dogma here. Moves and movements come or go based on merit, not adherence to a tagline. At Fight to Fight®, it isn’t about what is cool or flashy. It doesn’t matter what the lineage is or whether certain people trained with other certain people. What matters is, will what students are learning make them safer. That’s it…nothing more, nothing less. More is not always better; better is better. When it comes to Internet memes, videos, blogs and the like, everyone likes “cool”. When it comes to self-defense, cool will get you killed.
